About Kosuge village

Kosuge's village is a small mountain village in the Mizuho area of Iiyama city, Nagano Prefecture, overlooking the Chikuma river and facing Mt. Myoko. As one of Japan's heavy snow areas, the scenery of the village of Kosuge changes each season revealing the landscape, faith, and culture of ancient Japanese satoyama landscape, designated as one of the country's important cultural assets.
Kosuge village sits at the foot of the Mount Kosuge, 1047 meters, a sacred mountain explored by ‘En-no-ozunu', the founder of Shugen-do, Japanese mountain ascetism, and known locally as ‘God's Forest' for its beauty and mystery. Ascending the approach path from Kosuge Lower Shrine, you are surrounded by majestic cedar trees as far as the main Kosuge shrine, an important cultural asset and holy spot.

Half-way up the mountain lies Lake Hokuryu, in whose depths dragons are said to swim. A beautiful spot, providing a variety of water activities, including canoeing, sup, yoga, mindfulness, forest therapy and green tourism. Kosuge village is the ideal place to relax, open your mind and refresh from the bustle of city life. This short movie introduces the charm and serenity of Kosuge and Lake Hokuryu.
